How to prepare the perfect mint julep?
There is some controversy on two fundamental
aspects of this drink. Some argue that it should be prepared with gin, and
although over time this idea was discarded giving way to bourbon and some of
its derivatives, there are still those who continue this idea.
The other issue relates to the mint and how it
is used in the drink. Some argue that the mint leaves are crushed to almost
disintegrate, others who not only have to mash but also cut into small pieces
(similar to monitor ) and finally there are those who argue that simply leaves
must squeeze, squeezing gently to release its essence, flavor and aroma to the
drink.
The truth is that to prepare a perfect mint
julep should be used bourbon (if possible of Kentucky) and mint leaves should
be used in the latter form. Let's look at how to do things properly and need.
Mint Julep
Ingredients
Ø
3 oz of bourbon
(recommended Eva Williams or Maker's Mark Kentucky bourbon)
Ø
1 ounce simple syrup or
sugar syrup (it is always best to prepare yourself)
Ø
From 10 to 12 mint
leaves
Ø
Crushed ice
Ø
R ock glass cup of good
size (formerly used stainless steel vessels)
Ø
Preparation
Ø
In a Rock-type glass
vessel placed about 8 mint leaves and add the syrup.
Ø
Then gently crush the
leaves to release their essence and give flavor and aroma to the preparation,
taking caution not to crush them or destroy them (as seen in the images below).
Ø
Add the bourbon and fill
the glass with crushed ice until it overflows. Stir with a spoon until 80% of
the ice absorbs all the mixture and leave room in the glass to add even more
ice.
Ø
Add crushed ice filling
the glass again. Garnish with the remaining mint leaves and place one or two
small straws.
Ø
The small straws when
drinking will make the person drink his nose considerably closer to the leaves
and feel the cool minty scent deeply.
Ø
If you want you can add
a few drops of bitter orange essence or finally have a real mint julep
ready.
